June 6, 2019

Hi Families,

We have had another fun and exciting week in kindergarten!

Soapstone Art

Students enjoyed learning about traditional uses of soapstone and where it comes from. Students used rasps, 3 grits of sandpaper and oil to carve and complete their own soapstone shape. This was an excellent opportunity for children to work on their fine motor skills. Thank you again to all of our volunteers for making this a huge success! These works of art will be sent home on Monday. Please be sure to check your child's folder as they are fragile.

SOGO
SOGO Adventure Running
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered for SOGO in June. The students are very excited to return to Fish Creek Park!

On June 19th we are still requiring at least 2 more volunteers for the afternoon class. Please let me know if you would be interested. As this is an out of school experience, we are required to have a ratio of 1:5 for Kindergarten to ensure safe participation to and from the activity.

We have been preparing for this running adventure by challenging ourselves to run outside! This week we accomplished 3-4 paced laps around the school. We continue to review the "I can try" mantra and reflect on different ways we can add physical activity into our day.

Fire Hall (AM Class)
Walking Field Trip: Fire Hall
On Friday June 14, 2019, (weather permitting) kindergarten students will be walking to the Parkland Fire Station where we will learn about safety and the roles and responsibilities of a firefighter.  This field trip will take place during the Kindergarten morning, so children will be ready for pick up at the usual 12:00 pm dismissal time. All classes will be going separately.

Since this field trip is within walking distance and students will not be participating in any restricted activities, there are no specific consent forms that need to be signed and returned.  As with any field trip though, we want to inform you about some common hazards involved with walking field trips.  Please note this list may not include all of the hazards for a given trip:
·       Slips, trips and falls;
·       Getting separated from the group;
·       Street crossings;
·       Pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies

Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather on this day and that he/she wears appropriate footwear such as running shoes.

If you have any questions about this walking field trip, or if you do not want your child to participate, please contact me  at (403) 777-6830 or by email at jlhayes@cbe.ab.ca

Literacy
Each day kinders complete a journal entry on a variety of topics. Some students are working on labeling their picture with initial/ending consonant sounds, some are working on copying familiar patterned sentences (I can, I like, I see) and others are generating their own sentences. This week students worked on giving each other personalized feedback including a compliment and future areas for growth. Ask your child about the feedback they provided and the feedback they received from a peer and what their personal goals include (eg: letters on a line, neatness, finger spaces, re-reading their work independently).

Grade One Transition
Each day we continue to revisit and review the transition to grade one. PM kinders went to visit grade one on Friday morning to learn more about what their day will look like in September. This week the PM kinders read a story about a new teacher and had a discussion regarding what they want their new teacher to know about them.
