Literacy:
I have sent home Flash Cards to all children in my Kindergarten classes. These cards are specific to each individual child based on the letter recognition and their ability to remember letter sounds. Knowing letter names and sounds is the first step towards reading. If you are seeing your child sounding out letters or they can tell you the sound a letter makes, you can try building CVC (Consonant, vowel, consonant) words to see if they can sound them out. Ex: dog, cat, put, etc. You can also make up “alien” words (words that are not real words in English ex: tav, pif) and see if they can use their sound knowledge to sound it out properly. If they are able to sound out "alien" words properly, then they are using their sound knowledge. The issue with a lot of CVC words is that they are so common that kiddos start to memorize them and are not using their sound knowledge to sound the word out and this strategy does not help them later with tougher/longer words.
Valentine's Day:
As we do not have school on Valentine's Day, Kindergarten will not be handing out Valentine's Day cards.
Ozobots:
AM Kinders are enjoying making pathways for their Ozobot. Today we used two colours and had to move around obstacles.
Have a great weekend everyone!
