Hello Families!

We have just completed out 15th Annual Shave Your Lid for a Kid event and I am BLOWN AWAY. We had 48 students either shave their lid or cut off their ponytail and one staff member. We raised over $29,000 for Kids Cancer Care to aid them in more research for childhood cancer, develop newer and better treatment options, build awareness and send kids who have been impacted by cancer to Camp Kindle. This is amazing! We also had the special treat of having "Leaving Thomas" come and sing the song "We Got This" LIVE! Thank you for all of your support!!

In literacy we focused on the sounds of: qu, th (quiet ex: thin, think, thing), th (noisy ex: there, the, them), ng (ex: singing, running) and two super stars a and o. We have learned where our lips should be, where our tongue goes and if the sound is a quiet or noisy sound. Ask your child which sounds are quiet and which ones are noisy and where their tongue should be.

We continued to look at shapes this week. Looking at the number of edges, sides, and vertices. We also worked on drawing 2D and 3D shapes and sorting shapes by one attribute (ex: number of sides, shape of base). As we get closer to the end of the year, we will be finishing up shapes, moving onto measurement and then reviewing material we have already covered.

Walking Field Trip: Fire Hall
On Friday, May 24/31, 2019, (weather permitting) Kindergarten students will be walking to the Parkland Fire Station where we will learn about safety and the roles and responsibilities of a firefighter.  This field trip will take place during the Kindergarten morning, so children will be ready for pick up at the usual 12:00 pm dismissal time. All classes will be going separately.

Since this field trip is within walking distance and students will not be participating in any restricted activities, there are no specific consent forms that need to be signed and returned.  As with any field trip though, we want to inform you about some common hazards involved with walking field trips.  Please note this list may not include all of the hazards for a given trip:
·       Slips, trips and falls;
·       Getting separated from the group;
·       Street crossings;
·       Pre-existing medical conditions and/or allergies

Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather on this day and that he/she wears appropriate footwear such as running shoes.

If you have any questions about this walking field trip, or if you do not want your child to participate, please contact me  at (403) 777-6830 or by email at kcmckay@cbe.ab.ca.

If you would like to volunteer for this trip, please let me know. We need a ratio of 1:5 for this trip.

As this is a working Fire Station, if they are called to a fire, we will not be notified ahead of time and could show up to an empty building. Thank you for your understanding.

Happy Mother's Day!
